I came to know Peter only during the last years of his life - through the ‘Tuesday walking group’. He was always a great companion, with a wide range of interests and knowledge. Several visits to Egypt had given him an unquenchable enthusiasm for ancient Egyptian history, on which he was widely read and always fascinating. Current affairs engaged him too: his despair at our current political masters, Brexit and the decline of the Liberal Democrat party were never far below the surface. He combined enormous pride and self-deprecating wonder at the musical prowess of his grandchildren, Tom already an international star pianist: “I don’t know where they get it from!”. In fact, he himself had a fine singing voice and a passion for classical music – especially opera. Never one to dwell on his health challenges, Peter would quickly turn a conversation to “Yes, but how are you?” That was Peter – always interested in others and always up for a conversational wrestle.
